About Effie and Love Lachania

Growing up in South Australia as a second-generation Greek/Australian, I’ve always cherished my Greek heritage, especially the traditions of dance, music, and cuisine. My roots trace back to Lachania, a charming village in Rhodes, Greece, where my grandparents hailed from – my father from Pontian descent and my mother from Rhodian.

In 1999, at the age of 12, I embarked on a transformative journey to Lachania with my grandparents, instantly falling in love with the village. Since then, I’ve made numerous return visits, fostering a deep connection to the place. Back in Adelaide, Australia, the Lachanian Association reinforces our ties to the village through fundraising efforts, highlighting the enduring affection people have for their homeland.

Throughout my life in Australia, I’ve pursued various passions, including hairdressing, education, floristry, photography, and Greek dance instruction. Yet, despite my successes, I’ve always felt torn between the familiarity of Australia and the allure of Greece. The sense of community, cultural immersion, and quality of life in Greece beckoned me, ultimately leading to my decision to relocate to Rhodes with my family in 2020.

Living in my grandparents’ ancestral home in Lachania, we found ourselves at the heart of village life. The birth of our daughter, Theoni-Flora, further solidified our bond with Rhodes. We purchased a home in the Platia of Lachania, adjacent to the iconic Saint George Church and the renowned Platanos Taverna, which happened to belong to distant relatives, adding a special touch to our new chapter.

Embracing my artistic inclinations, I’ve contributed to the village’s ambiance by painting murals around Lachania since 2016. Engaging with local events and Greek dance lessons further integrates us into the community. Now, with our daughter growing older, I’m eager to resume working and contribute to our village’s vitality.

Motivated by my love for Lachania and a desire to enhance its offerings, I’ve launched “Love Lachania,” a venture aimed at promoting local artisans, providing services, and fostering community connections.

Through our website, we aim to showcase the village’s attractions, accommodations, and events while offering my mural painting services during the winter months.

Reflecting on my journey, I’m reminded of my grandfather’s words urging me to capture the essence of Lachania during my first visit. Though initially melancholic, his sentiment now fills me with gratitude as I witness the life we’ve built in this beloved village. As an Australian with deep roots in Greece, I’m committed to nurturing and celebrating all that Lachania has to offer, bridging cultures and creating meaningful experiences for visitors and locals alike.
